national notice, but at the end of the last week, the ousted republican secretary of state in indiana was sentenced for voter fraud. he had been convicted of six felonies, including voter fraud, and he's the guy who runs elections in the state of indiana. mitch daniels, the republican governor in indiana, had refused to appoint anybody permanently to replace this guy once he was convicted of voter fraud. the governor saying that if the felony convictions could get knocked down to misdemeanors, maybe, then he would be happy to reinstate this guy to run indiana's elections. ultimately, late last week, the republican secretary of state did not get his felony convictions busted down to misdemeanors, so he can't get back into office. and now indiana might get a democrat installed in the secretary of state's seat instead. but mitch daniels saying he wanted to put a convicted voter fraud felon in charge of the state's elections, that probably does not help mitch daniels' vice presidential chances either. which brings, of course, to the other great milk toast hope for the vice presidential ru

on the ballot at all in the state of indiana. they had to contest the findings of the largest county in indiana because that county had initially said he had not turned in enough signatures to get on the ballot there. the rick santorum campaign is a mess. the rick santorum campaign is like a formula one race and everybody is in a formula one car, rick santorum is in a pinewood derby car. whatever you think about him as a candidate his campaign cannot seem to put its pants on one leg at a time. they can't do the basic stuff of running for president. the stuff that has nothing to do with whether or not you were popular, whether or not you have a lot of money, just means you're together enough to do the logistical paperwork, they have not been able to do that. frankly that makes it more amazing mitt romney is having a hard time beating this guy. but in the republican nominating process, rick santorum being a mess of a campaign has sort of been the least messy of all their messes. in a normal year with a normal political party running these things the big deal state tomorrow would be virginia. all

, one more. this is la port county jail in la port, indiana. la port county jail is losing prisoners. one prisoner identified him himself as another prisoner. having thus tricked a corrections officer, he was accidentally set free. a couple weeks after that another prisoner was allowed to walk out of the la port county jail because he had the same last name as the guy who actually had served his time and was supposed to get out. and this week the south bend tribune reports a third person was erroneously mistakenly released from jail. the mistake wasn't even caught until police turned up at the prison to pick up this guy only to be told the guy was missing. missing from prison? the first two prisoners who were accidentally released were found immediately. but the third guy, still out there. prison officials blame mistakes on overcrowding. but unless these prisoners were literally like squeezed out of the jail like lime juice from a lime wedge, i'm not sure this overcrowding business is a very good excuse for losing prisoners. oddly compelling and creepy crimes can make for good creepy

and vaginal probes. indiana governor mitch daniels used to be on everybody's short list, then his secretary of state the top election official in the state was convicted of six felonies including voter fraud and mitch daniels said he hoped to still be able to have that guy run the state's elections. what? so the veep stakes have been weird. the republican running mate pool is not empty yet. for starters, there is rick perry, fox news reporting on preliminary negotiations for potential gingrich-perry ticket. both the perry and gingrich camps denied official talks but you never know. vp potential in the current field of candidates. you might remember when newt gingrich won in south carolina, all of his very excited south carolina supporters said they wanted rick santorum to be mr. gingrich's running mate. they chanted that at least. >> rick santorum showed enormous courage in iowa when had no money, nobody covered him and he kept campaigning. >> vp, vp. vp,vp. >> vp, vp newt gingrich basking this that idea. while newt gingrich used to enjoy sharing the ticket with rick santorum, mitt romney w

.c., then maryland, then wisconsin, connecticut, delaware, pennsylvania, rhode island, new york, indiana, west virginia, north carolina, you've got to go all the way through those states and to may 15th before you get to the oregon primary, but oregon republicans wanted to hold their debate next week, because what? what, the republican candidates were going to look down the field and decide from this vantage point that on march 19th it was going to be worth it to spend a day in oregon instead of any of the other states that vote before that on the calendar? i do not know what the oregon republican party was thinking, but they thought, apparently, they were going to get all of the republican presidential candidates to fly up to oregon for a debate next week, so when one of those candidates cancelled, mitt romney has bailed on the idea, oregon republicans, surprise, had to call the whole thing off. where mitt romney is going instead of oregon is across the street from right here, actually, after rick santorum accused the fox news channel earlier this week of shilling, in his words, for mitt romn
